Open Class Recording
Thank you everybody who joined the Open Class yesterday! I am teaching two courses right now, while preparing the third one that will start next week, with unprecedented number of old and new participants in my classes. Anybody who was smarter would just cancel the Open Class, but it felt wrong to cancel a free event and to pass up a chance to read and honor Alice Munro. At which point, I should have at least chosen a story I taught before. It's not like Munro is lacking in the category of fantastic stories, and I've chosen the best of the best for the classes. But, I love her story "Meneseteung." The story and its images and its song have stayed with me, echoed with me, they called to me. After thinking about many other stories and getting many good suggestions from my readers and writers, I decided to teach it. Then you all joined the class and made me see aspects of the story I didn't see before. Your comments made me think about the characters and details, big and small, in new ways, and to gain a new sense of the old setting where Munro brings her story to life. Thank you. Last night was a reminder as to why I teach these classes. No matter how much I love, read, and study a story, you make them richer and deeper for me. I value so much this privilege of adding your interpretations to mine. So if you missed this Open Class, you'd better not miss the next one! Kidding! What I meant was, if you missed this Open Class, I'll make the class recording available to everybody for 72 hours.
